KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Weekend parliamentary elections in Afghanistan are about empowering the people not highlighting a legacy of fraud, an election official said in Kabul.
Afghans in 34 provinces and in the nomadic Kuchi community will choose from among 2,400 candidates competing for the 249 seats open in the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament.
Presidential elections in 2009 were tainted by claims that Afghan President Hamid Karzai secured a second term in office through widespread fraud at the polls.
Johann Kriegler, a judge on the Afghan Electoral Complaints Commission, said the international community should focus on the democratic process and not fraud concerns.
