10 with terrorist links arrested under ISA

By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: Ten people, nine of them foreigners, with links to an international terrorist network were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) recently, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.
He said those arrested were on the wanted list of international agencies and their arrests were a result of a “close working relationship with international anti-terrorism agencies.”
The minister however declined to provide details on where and when the suspected terrorists were arrested and to which terrorist network they were linked.
“The 10 were arrested because they pose a serious threat to our security. It does not matter whether they were planning something (attacks) here or outside the country -- when they are on our shores, they are a threat.
“Thanks to our close co-operation with international agencies, the suspects were nabbed before they could remain in the country long enough to spread their influence.
“We are serious in fighting terrorism and we have laws such as the ISA to help us combat such activities,” he told reporters Wednesday.
It is not known whether the arrests are the same ones mentioned by prominent human rights lawyer Edmund Bon on his Twitter account earlier Wednesday.
He said that about 50 people of various nationalities, including students from local universities, were arrested last Thursday under the ISA.
Bon, a member of the Abolish ISA Movement, said that 38 were later released.
