7 rescued from flooded Chinese mine

CONGQING, China, July 30 (UPI) -- Seven miners survived more than three days in a coal mine after being trapped by a flood, officials said Friday.

The rescued miners were reported to be in stable condition at a hospital.

Rescuers reached the men Thursday after two days of pumping, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported. The first miner was pulled out early in the day and everyone was above ground by midnight.

The Laolongdong Coal Mine in Chongqing in Southwest China flooded Monday afternoon. Investigators said the miners may have accidentally drilled through a coal face to a neighboring mine that had flooded.

Three of the 10 men in the mine at the time managed to get out without help.
