Los Angeles wildfire spreads

LOS ANGELES, July 30 (UPI) -- Firefighters struggled Friday to keep a wildfire north of Los Angeles from reaching power lines that carry much of the region's electricity, officials said.

The Crown Fire in Leona Valley had burned at least 8,000 acres since it was reported Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported. A mandatory evacuation order for 2,000 homes was lifted.

The fire, driven by high winds with temperatures in the 90s, was only about 5 percent contained Friday morning.

"We are working the eastern and western perimeters to keep the fire out of Palmdale and out of the northeast Leona Valley," Los Angeles County Deputy Fire Chief Michael Bryant said, telling the Times preserving infrastructure, including the power lines, is the top priority.
