Toyota recalls 2000-2004 Avalons

WAS, D.C., July 30 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp., which has had a series of recalls, is now recalling 372,593 Avalons due to a steering problem, U.S. regulators announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the Japanese automaker was recalling Avalon models 2000 through 2004 because "there is a possibility that a minute crack may develop on the surface of the (steering) lock bar".

The crack could expand, eventually disrupting the ability to steer.

Consumers were advised to call the NHTSA at 888-327-4236 for information.

The company has instructed dealers to replace the steering interlock device free of charge. Car owners may also call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

The repair program will begin in late August, the NHTSA said.

The automaker had a series of highly publicized recalls during the past year because of unintentional acceleration in eight Toyota models.
