WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Security has been stepped up for the Marine Corps Marathon following a series of shootings at Marine Corps facilities in the Washington area.
The FBI said Friday the gunman does not appear to be trying to hurt anyone, The Washington Post reported. But investigators said he appears to be targeting locations associated with the Marines.
Tests have shown the same weapon was used at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., near Quantico, at the Pentagon and at an empty recruiting office in Chantilly, Va. While agents believe the same person fired more bullets overnight Thursday at the museum, that has not been confirmed.
John Perren, acting head of the Washington Field Office, said the shooter is probably a Marine or someone with grudge against the Marines.
"It may be that he feels he's been wronged by the Corps in his professional or personal life," Perren said.
The Marathon is being held Sunday, starting at Arlington National Cemetery and finishing at the Iwo Jima Memorial nearby.
