Back to school: Sarah excited despite broken arm

ANTHONY BUNN

A BROKEN arm has not dulled Sarah Herzina’s enthusiasm for school, with the Wodonga girl excited to be off for her first day at St Monica’s.

When asked what she was looking forward to today the eager five-year-old said “easy, everything”.

“On my first day I will be excited, my teacher is called Mrs Siemens and I’m in No.3 classroom and I’ve got a guardian angel,” Sarah said, referring to the year 6 student who will look after her.

Sarah will be accompanied to school by her grandfather as well as her mother Cathy, her father David and sister Simone, 4.

Mrs Herzina has mixed feelings about watching her eldest daughter join the school ranks.

“I’m happy and sad at the same time,” Mrs Herzina said.

“I’m glad because she’s ready for school and she’s keen to go, she needs to go to socialise with the kids, because she’s ready for that, but at the same time it’s sad because Simone and I won’t have her for company at home”.

Sarah broke two bones in her right arm after falling on to the bottom of a slide while on holidays at Wagga on December 29 and the cast is due to be removed on February 16.

Mrs Herzina is a bit apprehensive about how Sarah will cope with the broken arm while familiarising herself with a new environment.

“I just hope she doesn’t have a mishap,” Mrs Herzina said.

“These things happen and she’s just got to muddle her way through, with the help of her guardian angel and her teacher”.
