Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov could be forced to undergo surgery in a bid to resolve a troublesome knee injury.
The Bulgaria international, who has largely been criticized following his GDP 30 M signing in September 2008, missed Saturday's 1-1 draw with Birmingham.
And manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that the former Tottenham ace may need to go under the knife to get to the root of the problem.
Ferguson told the club's official website: "He wanted to play with it but we felt we should try and get it sorted and get him fit again.
"He may have to have an exploratory operation".
The Scot had claimed at the end of December that Berbatov would not require surgery as the Red Devils had nursed him through the season.
