JEDDAH: The officials for the 25 committees at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) will be comprised mostly of people that have been elected by the board of directors.

According to Mazen Batarji, deputy chairman of the JCCI, this will be the first time the committees will be comprised mostly of members that have been elected by the board of directors, which is partially elected by the chamber’s 40,000-strong membership.

“Unlike in the past, 300 members will be elected (by the board) and 150 members nominated for all the committees of the JCCI,” Batarji told Arab News on Saturday.

Each committee is comprised of 18 members; a dozen of these positions will be elected posts while experts in the fields of business pertaining to each committee will appoint six members.

The Kingdom’s chambers of commerce are powerful organizations that perform various tasks, including acting as a quasi-governmental organ that notarizes official documentation.

Hassan Naqur, former deputy chairman of the JCCI’s Transport Committee, said the move to elect most of the committees’ membership is a novel development in the history of chambers in the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, on Saturday the JCCI decided to postpone a decision on the fate of Mustafa Sabri as the chamber’s secretary-general. The board members also chose Ziyad Al-Bassam as the new chairman of the Finance Committee. “Bassam was elected as chairman unanimously,” said Naqur.
