Man killed during home invasion in Melbourne's east

THOMAS HUNTER

A man has been killed and a woman is in critical condition following a bloody home invasion in Melbourne’s south-east early today, police say.
The couple, believed to be in their 60s, were assaulted in their Field Street, Bentleigh home about 4.30am.
An  ‘‘unknown object’’ was used to bludgeon the couple, police said. The Age understands it may have been a hammer.
Police could not say if robbery was the motive.
Homicide squad detectives have been called in to investigate the incident and a crime scene has been set up at the house.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were called about 4.3oam to find a man and a woman, both in their 60s, with ‘‘significant injuries to the upper body’’.
‘‘Unfortunately the man died at the scene,’’ said intensive care paramedic Andrew Bishop.
‘‘The 60-year-old woman was also paralysed down one side.
‘‘We were concerned about the potential for spinal injuries in the assault so fitted a neck brace to the woman.
‘‘A drip was put in both of the woman’s arms and she was given pain relief and fluids to help maintain her blood pressure.
The inured woman was taken to The Alfred hospital in critical condition.
