Past presidents ask Yar'Adua to go

A group comprising past heads of state, chief justices, ministers and permanent secretaries has called on President Umaru Yar'Adua to formally notify the senate of his medical vacation abroad in compliance with section 145 of the constitution.

The group, Eminent Elders Group (EEG) said it is very important that Mr.Yar'Adua complies with the constitution so as to allow the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, to act in his stead while he is away.

"It is important to resolve this issue by inviting the president to formally issue the necessary communication that will enable the vice president to be Acting President in accordance with section 145 of the 1999 constitution as soon as possible," the group said.

This is coming less than 24 hours after the senate adopted a motion urging the president to comply with the same section of the constitution.
