LONDON: Saudi students in the UK have launched an FM radio station that airs the concerns, interests and activities of Saudi students in the UK, and plays traditional Saudi music for one hour once a week.
“Mobta3th Voice Radio,” which is live, is broadcast every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. (GMT) from Glasgow Caledonian University and is the brainchild of four Saudi students -- Hamza Al-Safi, radio producer and program presenter; Mousa Al-Harbi, control and airing manager; Fahad Al-Subaiei, website and information security manager; and Fawaz Al-Reemi, media manager.
Speaking about the station, Al-Reemi, 27, a PhD candidate in inorganic chemistry, said, “To begin with, the project did not cost us much and relying on the team’s media experience has helped a lot in saving money and time”.
The only expenses incurred have been in getting a new mobile phone number to receive listeners’ SMS messages and requests.
The idea is not new, he added. “We were just waiting for the right time and right team and thank God on March 1 we managed to go on air”.
During their first hour live, the group received up to 200 messages from listeners, something that is indicative of its growing popularity.
The team has been supported by Glasgow Caledonian University, which provided the group with an equipped studio. “It’s not only to benefit the audience, but it is also beneficial for us to enhance our skills and gain more knowledge,” said Al-Reemi.
