Way out of energy crisis, by Barkindo, others – The Guardian

Managers of the Nigerian power and energy sector yesterday appeared to step out of endless excuses for the persistence of outages in the country into a confrontational move to solve the problem.
Unlike the usual reasons of lapses in the gas production and supply chain being given for the power crisis, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Mohammed Barkindo, has identified inadequate number of thermal plants to use the product for electricity generation as the major problem.
At the “Gas to Power Stakeholders’ Forum’ in Lagos yesterday, Barkindo said Nigeria produces enough gas but lacks the thermal plants to use the product for power supply.
Barkindo disclosed that as much as 400mmcf/d of gas produced is left unused as the power stations meant to use them were not completed.
