Dutch advise World Bank rep to abstain on Eskom

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands has advised its World Bank representative to abstain from supporting a $3.75 billion coal-fired power plant loan for South African state utility Eskom, citing a lack of progress on developing renewable alternatives, a spokesman for the Dutch Foreign Ministry said.
Eskom has argued it has no immediate alternative but to develop the 4,800-megawatt Medupi coal-fired plant, for which the United States is also expected to withhold support on environmental grounds.
