WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – An Iraqi electoral court disqualified a candidate on Monday after charges he was involved with Saddam Hussein's Baath Party, reported The New York Times.
The result would delay the formation of a new government as the Parliament is divided between Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, the current prime minister, and Ayad Allawi, the opposition leader, who won more seats after the election.
A delay could impact the United States decision to withdraw combat troops and increase tensions and violence in Iraq.
“It’s an effort to defame the political process,” Maysoon al-Damlouji told The New York Times, who is a spokesperson for Mr. Allawi.
The decision will go to the federal court next.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Hajim al-Hassani told The New York Times, who is a member of Mr. Maliki’s party. “It’s going to the federal court. It’s up to these institutions to resolve these questions”.
