A Russian hacker, who attempted to sell the login details of millions of Facebook users, claims to be living in New Zealand.
The hacker known as Kirllos is offering the usernames and passwords of 1.5 million users of popular social networking site for up to $NZ62.70 ($A48.70) per 1000 accounts sold on an underground hacker forum, the New Zealand Herald reported.
Buyers are told to contact Kirllos through ICQ instant messaging service, which lists his address as New Zealand.
The login details of as many as 700,000 Facebook users had already been sold, The New York Times reported.
At least one New Zealander had his details listed on the forum in February when Kirllos put 100,000 accounts up for sale, according to local media reports.
Detective Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel from the National Cyber Crime Centre said they would join forces with overseas law enforcement agencies to try to track down the hacker.
Facebook information can be used to try to gain access to bank details, a local cyber crime expert said.
Little is known about Kirllos, but the New Zealand Herald said, according to his ICQ profile, he is a 24-year-old born in Russia and can speak English, French and Russian.
