Gay AMU prof found dead

Aligarh Muslim University teacher Srinivas Ramchandra Siras — suspended for allegedly having gay sex and later reinstated — was found dead at his residence in Aligarh on Wednesday.

Chairman of the university's modern Indian language department, Siras was due to retire in September.

He vacated his university accommodation after his suspension on February 9 and shifted to a rented house.

Amit Kumar, Siras' neighbour, said Siras returned from his hometown Nagpur two days ago. On Wednesday, a foul smell started emanating from his apartment.

Receiving no response from inside, Kumar peeped in and found Siras on the bed. He promptly informed the police.

The police broke open the door and found his pillow soaked in blood. A book was found nearby and some other books were scattered on the floor.

Superintendent of Police Mansingh Chauhan said no reason could be attributed to the death as of now.

On April 2, the Allahabad High Court stayed suspension order on Siras, who joined AMU in 1998. He was suspended following a video clip showing him having sex with another man.
