Government to partner students to bring peace to Bawku

Winneba (C/R), April 29, GNA - Vice President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated government's preparedness to support students and the youth in their quest to bring lasting peace to Bawku.

He therefore urged students and the youth from the area to unite and be ambassadors of peace.

Vice President Mahama said this in a speech read for him at the inauguration of the Upper East Students Union (UPESU) branch of the University of Education, Winneba.

In attendance were four Members of Parliament from the area led by the Chairman of the Upper East caucus in Parliament, Mr Dominic Azumah.

The Vice President appealed to political leaders from the north to stop engaging in complex chieftaincy issues and give peace a chance.

He reminded students from the Region to take their studies seriously since it is the only means of bridging the developmental gap between the north and the south.

The Vice President reiterated that the Savannah Accelerated Development Fund would speed up development in the three northern regions and advised the youth to take advantage of its benefits.

In a speech read on his behalf the Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Owen Woyongo, called on students to partner government and bring their expertise to bear in finding lasting peace to Bawku.

He said the Regional Coordinating Council was happy that students were putting in much effort to restore peace to Bawku and appealed to citizens in the area to co-operate with the security agencies in their attempt to bring lasting peace to the area.

The President of UPESU, Moses Bampil Badeabo, said the union was poised to adopt a "door-to-door" peace campaign strategy during the long vacation, targeting mainly the youth of Bawku.
