Miss. lesbian student's prom night falls short

JACKSON, Miss. -- It wasn't quite the rite of passage Constance McMillen was expecting.

The lesbian high school student in Mississippi went to court to be allowed to bring her girlfriend to the senior prom and wear a tuxedo.

But she says only seven people showed up for a private prom organized after the school district canceled its prom. McMillen says most of her peers went to another dance at a nearby community center.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued on McMillen's behalf, believes that the private prom where McMillen was invited was a decoy to keep her from attending the other party.
