A top Rio de Janeiro state security official said Thursday that at least 200 people were buried in a mudslide Wednesday night, probably killing them instantly.

Civil Defense subsecretary Pedro Machado told Globo television that the slide plowed into a slum in the city of Niteroi.

Record rains since Monday have been triggering mudslides across the Rio region.

The official death toll already stood at 153 before the Wednesday night disaster.
