Christianshavn-based Noma restaurant moves from third place to be crowned best restaurant in the world
Gourmet Copenhagen restaurant Noma has been crowned the best restaurant in the world by acclaimed publication Restaurant Magazine.
At the awards in London last night, the Michelin-starred restaurant jumped from bronze position to take the top spot ahead of Spanish El Bulli and English restaurant Fat Duck.
Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli had held the top accolade for the last four year’s running, but it has been a turbulent year for both it and the Fat Duck. In January it was announced that El Bulli would close for two years, while the Fat Duck was temporarily forced to close last year after a well-documented food poisoning incident.
Noma, with its unique fare of Nordic cuisine, first appeared in the magazine’s list at number 33 in 2006.
‘You can take the first and second Michelin stars and multiple them by 100 and then you’ll have some idea of what this award means for Noma,’ the restaurant’s head chef René Redzepi told Politiken newspaper.
Local food critics are certain the recognition bestowed on Noma will have a knock-on effect for other Danish haunts.
‘The placement has great meaning for Noma, Copenhagen and Denmark. It’s very unique. The other restaurants on the list are not exactly simple highway inns so for Noma to be number one has significant meaning. The restaurant will have even more visitors and will gain recognition as a gastronomic mecca,’ said Jyllands-Posten’s critic Niels Lillelund.
