Fifteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery attack that led to the death of the late politician Abubakar Rimi, the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo has said.
The late Rimi’s vehicle was attacked late Sunday evening on his way from Bauchi to Kano in the company of his younger brother, Sule Sa’a, who was physically assaulted by the assailants.
Mr. Rimi died by 11.35pm that same day, at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, reportedly, as a result of the shock he developed during the attack.
Mr. Onovo announced the arrest yesterday in Kano when he led top police chiefs to the house of the late former governor of Kano, to pay condolence to the family.
The acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, had ordered Mr. Onovo to find the attackers of the late flamboyant politician.
Mr. Onovo, while taking questions from journalists, revealed that the police were able to arrest the suspects with the help of vigilante and local community leaders.
He said the suspects, who are local hoodlums, are currently undergoing interrogation and promised that the police will get to the bottom of the matter.
“Fifteen persons have been arrested, through the effort of the vigilante and the district head, other community leaders including the efforts of Meyeti Allah that have been called upon to assist us,” he said.
“Because they are local hoodlums they must be known in the vicinity. Those people arrested are still been interrogated and I can assure you we will come to the bottom of this”.
The police, he said, had been keeping surveillance on and patrolling the road before the day the incident occurred.
“In crime prevention, it is a battle you win some, you lose some. It is very unfortunate because that particular road has been under police surveillance and patrol for a very long time. It is indeed unfortunate that the incident happened on that road that has been very safe for a very long time,” he said.
