World leaders send condolences

Condolences are flowing into Warsaw from leaders around the world on the news that President Lech Kaczynski died, Saturday morning, in a plane crash in Russia



German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "deeply shocked" on learning of the death of President Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska and many other of Poland’s top politicians. Chancellor Merkel will be making a special statement to the press this afternoon in Berlin.


German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle says he is deeply moved by the death of Poland’s head of state.


Russian president, Dimitry Medvedev has said: "I, like all Russian citizens, have accepted with deep and sincere shock the news of the tragic death of the Republic of Poland's President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and the members of the large Polish delegation near the city of Smolensk, who were on their way for commemorations in Katyn".

British prime minister Gordon Brown said he was shocked and sadden by the news of Kaczynski’s death. 

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov expressed his condolences. "Poland has lost an outstanding statesman, who until his last hour remained connected with the Polish idea, and the fate of Poland,” he said.


Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych sent his sympathy to the Polish people and Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Kaczynski was a true friend of Israel.


Deepest condolences to the Polish nation have also been sent by President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite. (pg)
