Egypt’s irrationality on the use of the Nile River

By Balcha Huressa

Despite various prophesies that the utilization of  rivers as major sources of conflict in the Horn of Africa, many social science analysts argue that the Nile Waters could integrate member countries economically as it has been integrating them culturally. The former have attempted to substantiate their argument quoting the consistent rejections of the two Nile Basin (NB) countries to sign on the agreements made by the other riparian countries to use their waters equitably and reasonably. However, many people believe that the Nile Waters, by no means, would be a source of tension and conflict among those people along the Basin.

Nix lead these countries to conflict no matter what stand Egypt and Sudan may take. Of course, there is a paradox in Egypt’s stand. On one hand, Egypt declared it won’t oppose the developments made in any of the riparian countries. On the other hand, it consistently rejects any form of treaties that could help the basin countries to use the waters fairly. Even, it recently warned any development project on the Nile River.
