German police officer tells all: "We fear for our lives!"

REPORTED BY FRANZ SOLMS-LAUBACH

The violence on Germany's streets is getting worse, so much so that interior ministers at federal and state level want to impose heavier punishments for attacks on police officers in future.

Hamburg Interior Senator Christopher Ahlhaus (CDU), chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers, called for the maximum penalty for ‘obstructing a police officer’ to be increased from two to three years at the spring meeting of ministers.
The action is being taken in response to alarming figures showing increasing attacks on German security officials.
On Wednesday, a study showed the number of serious injuries suffered by police officers following an assault has increased by at least 60 per cent between 2005 and 2009.
