LONDON — A British soldier died on Saturday, two weeks after being wounded by an explosion in southern Afghanistan, Britain's Ministry of Defence said.
"It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a soldier from 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj North," a statement said.
"The soldier died in RCDM Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, on 26 June 2010 as a result of injuries sustained during an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj North District of Helmand Province on the afternoon of 10 June 2010".
The death brings to 308 the number of British troops to have been killed in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion.
Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, largely battling Taliban militants in Helmand, making it the second largest contributor to the NATO force in Afghanistan.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday he planned to bring troops out by 2015, and US President Barack Obama has said he wants to begin withdrawals in July next year.
