Egypt restates support for Mideast peace forum in Moscow

Cairo supports the idea of holding a Mideast conference in Moscow, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said on Wednesday.
"In the course of negotiations with the Russian [foreign] minister, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak reiterated his support for holding a Mideast peace conference in Moscow," Gheit said after talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
Lavrov, in Cairo as part of his Middle East tour, had a meeting with Mubarak earlier on Wednesday, which was closed to the press.
Gheit said Moscow and Cairo "have a complete concurrence in positions and approaches toward the current situation in the region".
Russia offered in 2005 to host a Mideast peace conference in Moscow. The idea was endorsed by the "quartet" of international mediators (Russia, the United States, the EU, and the UN). However, the parties concerned acknowledge that the political prerequisites for a conference were not in place as of yet.
