17.33 BST “At this stage we’ve recovered twelve bodies plus Mr Bird and we’re continuing to search,” says DCC Hyde. Police won’t be releasing details of those killed at this point, as they are still talking to the relatives of the victims.
17.32 BST Police are trying to piece together Derrick Bird’s history, access to firearms and motivations, DCC Hyde says. They cannot comment on claims that some shootings took place last night or that members of Bird’s family were attacked. Two weapons were used, he says, and both have been recovered.
DCC Hyde appeals to people with families and friends in West Cumbria to make sure they are safe and well. It sounds as though police are concerned there may still be more crime scenes they have not discovered. Anyone with information about Derrick Bird’s movements or motivations should call 0845 3300247, he says.
