THREE FROM BIG ISLE MAKE ROUND OF 16
Sean Maekawa displayed just enough resolve to overcome a couple bad patches of golf Wednesday at Honolulu's Oahu Country Club. He'll likely need more of it when he plays one of Hawaii's golf greats today.
After building a comfortable lead in his second-round Manoa Cup match, Maekawa stumbled but hung on for a 1-up win over Honolulu's Skye Inakoshi.
"I had some stretches of pretty good holes and stretches of not so good holes -- a little up and down,'' said Maekawa, who will play four-time Manoa Cup champion Brandan Kop at 7:14 a.m. today.
Maekawa, a 2007 Honokaa graduate who will enter his senior year at the University of Oregon this fall, and two other Big Island golfers advanced to the round of 16 in the match play portion of the Manoa Cup, which continues through Saturday. Hunter Larson scored a 1-up victory over Henry Park in a battle of Kealakehe alums, and 2007 Hawaii Prep graduate Max Bonk defeated Punahou School's Brian Lee, 2 and 1.
Maekawa got to the next round by playing well under pressure on the back nine.
