(CNN) -- Former top-ranked tennis player Jennifer Capriati is recuperating at a south Florida hospital after what a spokeswoman described as an accidental overdose of prescription medication.
Spokeswoman Lacey Wickline said the medication was prescribed by Capriati's personal physician. The tennis star is "recovering fully and speedily," she said.
The exact time is unclear, but the overdose is said to have happened late Saturday or early Sunday. Capriati, 34, is listed in stable condition, Wickline said.
The medication involved -- and the hospital where Capriati was admitted -- were not disclosed.
"In response to the outpouring of concern and support shown by Jennifer's friends and fans worldwide, we would like to acknowledge that Jennifer is recuperating at a south Florida hospital from an accidental overdose of medication prescribed by her personal physician," Wickline said in a statement. "The Capriati family asks that you respect their privacy, and they will provide updates when available".
The reigning women's champion, Serena Williams, told the British Press Association that she will pray for Capriati.
"I probably will definitely see how that goes and pray for everyone involved," she told the news service.
Capriati burst onto the tennis scene as a teenager, earning $1 million before turning 16. She dropped out of the sport in the mid-1990s amid a series of personal problems but later mounted a successful comeback and won three grand slam singles titles.
