Word for Daddy as two soldiers are farewelled

TODDLER Mason Smith was too young to get the desperately sad significance of the formal ramp ceremony for the daddy who wouldn't be coming home.
The poignant scene unfolded at Brisbane's Amberley air base yesterday morning as the bodies of Mason's father, Sapper Darren Smith, and Sapper Jacob Moerland - both killed in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan - arrived home.
Young Mason's heart leapt when he caught sight of an A4-sized colour photo of his dad in army greens, with his collie-cross workmate Herbie, resting on a lectern in the terminal hangar.
