Downpour floods Manila, diverts flights

MANILA, Philippines, July 26 (UPI) -- Torrential rains in the Philippines capital of Manila flooded large areas of the city, snarled traffic and caused diversion of airline flights, officials said.

Rainfall totaling almost 4 inches fell in just 2 hours Monday from a band of heavy clouds and thunderstorms expected to continue for much of the week, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

Public safety officers sent motorboats to conduct rescues in Quezon City where floodwaters rose more than 3 feet, the newspaper said.
