Drilling resumes soon; BP's Hayward to go

VENICE, La., July 26 (UPI) -- It may be days before drilling of a relief well will resume in an attempt to plug BP's blown-out Gulf of Mexico well, company officials said.

Drilling had been suspended because of Tropical Storm Bonnie, which was downgraded to a tropical depression late last week.

Work resumed at the site while the company prepared to replace its chief executive officer,Tony Hayward, reports said.

BP said the rig responsible for drilling the relief well returned to the site and crews worked to reconnect with the well so drilling can resume, CNN reported Monday.

BP workers cut off the flow of oil with a containment cap, but officials said the only way to permanently close the gusher is to drill a relief well.

Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft said Sunday after touring the scene that oil on the gulf surface was breaking down "very quickly" and naturally since the flow was staunched.
