Government sends relief items to flood victims

The federal government has presented tonnes of relief materials meant for victims of the recent torrential flood in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, to the state government for onward transmission to 300 households, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, announced at the weekend.

Mr. Bankole, who made this known during his visit to some affected areas in the town, which included private residents and a number of affected bridges, said the National Emergency Management Agency{NEMA} had delivered the consignment.

"NEMA has been in Abeokuta for the past three days and they have assured me they brought some materials, which the Ogun State government has received; and they will be bringing more of these things. I can assure you that more will come," he said.

On the damaged bridges, the Speaker, accompanied by the deputy speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Remmy Hazzan; acting director general, National Emergency Management Agency {NEMA}, Charles Agbo; and Kayode Odunaro, his special adviser on communications, assured that channelisation work in the town is in the offing.

He recalled that before the downpour, which wrecked havoc in the town about a week ago, some funds had been put into this year's supplementary budget for the channelisation. He expressed shock that the rain came after the job was concluded.

Donate materials

The NEMA boss said his group would soon donate relief materials to the victims.

"We brought a lot of materials. I cannot put a figure; we will distribute them when we meet the state government. We will do that appropriately, hopefully next week," he said.

The relief materials included mattresses, vegetable oil, rice, detergent, buckets, kitchen utensils, blanket, nylon mats, salt, bath towel, and clothing.
