Italian police nab top Naples mobster

NAPLES, Italy, July 8 (UPI) -- The fugitive head of a powerful Italian mafia clan has been captured in an early morning raid at his seaside villa near Naples, police in Italy said Thursday.

Officers surrounded Cesare Pagano's villa, fired warning shots and then broke inside, the Italian news agency ANSA reports.

Pagano, who had two bodyguards with him, offered no resistance, police said.

Interior Minister Roberto Marconi called Pagano's capture "another important victory against organized crime".

Pagano was head of a clan that waged a turf war with a rival clan in Naples that claimed some 70 lives in 2004 and 2005.

His family made huge sums of money through exclusive control of the drug trade in two crime-ridden districts of Naples.
