Prisons should serve as rehab centers, says HRC

RIYADH: The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has demanded that officials in charge of the Kingdom’s prisons address what an HRC inquiry commission called shortcomings in the jail system.
The demand was aired during a meeting recently with Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Harithy, director of prisons.
While commending efforts of prison officials, HRC President Bandar Al-Aiban said the Saudi human rights watchdog seeks to ensure the prisoners are enjoying all their rights.
The HRC delegation conducted a tour of various prisons in the Kingdom recently.
The delegation has also called for expediting judicial procedures to resolve cases where suspects are being held for long periods without trial.
