Sick kitten dropped into library box

CHELTENHAM, Pa., July 27 (UPI) -- A small kitten was stuffed into a book drop at a library in the Philadelphia suburbs, officials say.

A maintenance man at the La Mott Community Center found the kitten Friday morning after he heard its cries coming from the book depository, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Carmen Ronio, head of the Montgomery County SPCA, said the kitten appeared to have been in the box for about 12 hours during a night of stifling heat. He said the animal was sick when it was put in the box, but the ordeal worsened its condition and it suffered from dehydration as well as an eye infection and diarrhea.

Ronio said Monday the kitten had about a 70 percent chance of survival.
