Some in EU seek speedy Serbian membership

BRUSSELS, July 27 (UPI) -- Serbia's allies in its push to join the European Union say the process should be hastened now that Kosovo's declaration of independence has been upheld.

The International Court of Justice ruled against Serbia last week. The tribunal in The Hague said Kosovo has the right to go its own way.

EU foreign ministers met Monday in Brussels. Several said Serbia and President Boris Tadic should be given encouragement in their efforts to move closer to the union.

"We need to help a sincere pro-European like Tadic with very positive message," said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.
