130 dead, 600 missing in India floods

LEH, India, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Rescuers raced Sunday to try to reach 600 people still missing after flash floods killed more than 130 people in India's Kashmir region, authorities said.

Floodwaters ran in torrents, destroying much of what lay in their path in Leh in the Himalayan Ladakh region, NDTV, New Delhi, reported.

Among the missing were 31 jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police whose camp was washed away.

Floods wiped out entire villages in the mountainous region, including some along the Chang La pass, the world's second-highest road autos can drive on, NDTV said. The hospital in Leh was destroyed.

Officials said 1,200 army soldiers were working around-the-clock to remove rubble and search for victims. UPI
