American-born drug kingpin arrested in Mexico

(CNN) -- A man purported to be one of Mexico's most ruthless drug traffickers, American-born Edgar Valdez Villarreal, was captured Monday following a shootout, Mexican authorities said.
Federal police made the capture, though exact location of the arrest was not immediately known.
The arrest followed "intelligence work" that began in June 2009, federal police said in a statement.
Valdez, who was known as "La Barbie," was a one-time top lieutenant of Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, but broke away to the Beltran Leyva cartel. The leader of the Beltran Leyva cartel, Arturo Beltran Leyva, was killed last year, and his brother Carlos was arrested, leaving Valdez in a fight to fill in the power vacuum. CNN
