China might change death-penalty laws

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- China may reduce the number of crimes punishable by death from 68 to 55, officials said.

If approved, an amendment to remove 13 crimes would be the first major revision since 1997, the Xinhua news agency said Monday.

The revision would make lethal injection the method of execution.

The amendment would affect charges for which the death penalty was infrequently imposed in recent years, such as the smuggling of relics and forgery of specialized value-added tax receipts. UPI
