Concert shows London's love for Sondheim

LONDON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Broadway's Stephen Sondheim says he was thrilled with a concert of his musical hits in London that saluted to his 80th birthday.

The BBC Proms event at the Royal Albert Hall Saturday included an all-star cast and numbers from his hit musicals such as "Into the Woods" and "Sweeney Todd".

The stage veteran told the BBC prior to the show that he was looking forward to the rich sounds. "There is very little as thrilling as a full orchestra in a reverberant hall," he said.

The performers included Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel, a bevy of London stage stars and Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench, who sang "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music".
