(CNN) -- A fire inside a gold mine trapped at least 50 workers in eastern China's Shandong province Friday evening, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
It was not immediately known if anyone was killed by the fire, which erupted in the Lingnan Gold Mine in Zhaoyuan, a spokesman with the Yantai City government told Xinhua.
Another 200 workers escaped the mine after the fire began, the spokesman said.
A preliminary investigation suggested an underground cable sparked the fire, he said. CNN
