LEH, India, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Flash floods in India's mountainous Kashmir region have killed at least 60 people and injured hundreds more, authorities said.
An intense overnight storm triggered floods when most residents of the Himalayan Ladakh region were asleep, the Voice of America reported Friday.
Mud and debris carried down mountain slopes by the flooding caused extensive damage in the region's main city of Leh and in surrounding villages.
Residents and authorities in the area were caught by surprise by the flooding. At 11,000 feet above sea level, the Ladakh region is a high altitude desert that normally gets little rain. UPI
