Indonesian cleric arrested for role in starting militant training camp

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- An Islamic cleric was arrested Monday for playing a key role in the establishment of a militant training camp in Indonesia's Aceh region, authorities said.
Abu Bakar Bashir -- a religious leader known for his anti-Western rhetoric -- has been arrested twice previously for his activities in connection with militant groups.
Police said Bashir funded and approved of a potential terror plot to attack the national police headquarters, several unnamed embassies and hotels in Jakarta. An assault on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also was part of the plan, according to police.
"He knew all about the training and plans in Aceh, through regular reports he received from the field," said National Police Inspector General Edward Aritononang.
In May, police raided the headquarters of Jama'ah Ansharut Tauhid -- a hardline group Bashir heads. They charged three officials with raising funds for a militant training camp in Aceh in North Sumatra.
The group's involvement led to speculation that Bashir would be arrested as well. CNN
