TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Iran intends to construct more nuclear power plants and welcomes cooperation from the West, a senior Iranian legislator said.
Alaeddin Borouyjerdi, head of the Parliament's national security and foreign policy commission, told the Fars news agency plans are under way to build more plants.
Iran welcomes cooperation from countries such as France, Germany and the United States, he said.
Borouyjerdi said Iran will continue its uranium enrichment program because it is needed for future power plants.
"The power plants that we will build, or others will build for us, will need fuel and this is the reason for our uranium enrichment, and Darkhoveyn will be the first of such nuclear power plants," Borouyjerdi said.
A Russian-built nuclear power plant at Bushehr is scheduled start operating Saturday. UPI
