Israel to reject Quartet statement

JERUSALEM, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Israel will reject conditions stipulated by the Quartet for the resumption of direct talks with the Palestinians, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says.

The Quartet relates to group of countries involved in the Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking process and includes the United States, European Union countries, Russia and the United Nations.

The Israeli Cabinet met Sunday to discuss plans by the Quartet to issue a statement establishing a basis for the start of talks between the sides, Israeli media reports said Monday.

Officials in Jerusalem said Netanyahu would only accept a directive from the United States that does not include any preconditions for talks. UPI
