Kagan heads toward confirmation

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate will confirm Elena Kagan as the fourth woman to serve on the Supreme Court before beginning its summer recess, political observers say.

To end on a high note, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., decided to hold several days of debate on Kagan's nomination this week, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

A vote by the full Senate is expected Thursday afternoon or evening followed by adjournment for five weeks.

Five Republican senators have already announced their support for Kagan's nomination while the GOP has indicated it will not force a filibuster vote.

Still, Kagan is likely to get only 63 to 65 votes with conservative Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska joining the opposition. UPI
