Lawyer questions evidence against cleric

JAKARTA, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Evidence against a radical Muslim cleric accused of plotting terrorism in Indonesia was fabricated, his lawyer says.

Wirawan Adnan said the government's efforts to convict cleric Abu Bakar Bashir of establishing a terrorist training camp in Indonesia would end in an acquittal, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Tuesday.

Bashir's arrest follows the discovery by the country's counter-terrorism unit of a new cell at a training camp in the Indonesian province of Aceh.

The group was reportedly discussing bombing the Australian embassy in Jakarta as well as Indonesian police headquarters.

Indonesian authorities said they will prove Bashir had a direct role in establishing the cell, funding it and appointing its field commander. UPI
