PHOENIX, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- First-round draft pick Barret Loux will become a free agent Sept. 1 after MLB helped settle a dispute between the pitcher and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks picked Loux, a right-hander from Texas A&M, as the sixth overall choice in June. But he reportedly failed a physical. The team, under an agreement, decided to take another pick, the seventh next year.
Reports said Loux and the team had reached an agreement before his problems with a shoulder and elbow surfaced, but then were unable to finalize the deal.
Loux would have been ineligible to play on a team this year without a deal, and would have re-entered the draft next June.
But Major League Baseball intervened and the sides worked it out. UPI
